Hating Facebook's Edgerank

Why Facebook is becoming pasty (aside from the interruptive ad placements). When I post something controversial and you ignore it, it ranks low on Edgerank, Facebook's algorithm for what to post to the Feed. If you only Like sugar, or only engage with sugar, you only get sugar. Pretty dumb of Facebook.

Barry Schwartz: Using our practical wisdom

The first thing I want to do is say thank you to all of you. The second thing I want to do is introduce my co-author and dear friend and co-teacher. Ken and I have been working together for almost 40 years. That's Ken Sharpe over there. (Applause) So there is among many people -- certainly me and most of the people I talk to -- a kind of collective dissatisfaction with the way things are working, with the way our institutions run. Our kids' teachers seem to be failing them. Our doctors don't know who the hell we are, and they don't have enough time for us. We certainly can't trust the bankers, and we certainly can't trust the brokers. They almost brought the entire financial system down. And even as we do our own work, all too often, we find ourselves having to choose between doing what we think is the right thing and doing the expected thing, or the required thing, or the profitable thing. So everywhere we look, pretty much across the board, we worry that t...

Queer

#Queer ~ People hate this term. I don't. I hear that it is self-derisive and used as hate speech and can't be reclaimed and is self-poison, but I don't agree. To me the 'LGBTI' is so structured, it negates the fluidity of sexuality. For one,  it excludes non-heteronormative hets. I use queer, and I want all people who don't fit into 'normal' to be 'queer' by choice. I invite them to be, I want everyone to see that 'queer' is the new 'normal'.  # Queer  ~ 'Queer' recognizes fluidity in sexuality. LGBTI is confining, exclusionary. Non-heteronormative hets could choose to be 'queer'.

Malawian leadership

Malawi President Joyce Banda says, "I as a leader have no right to influence how people feel." (http://bit.ly/SsWXgz) COMMENT: It may be that Banda needs to understand that she is applying the word 'leadership' incorrectly - or perhaps somebody rounded a vernacular word up to leadership and it's not the word she said... because leadership means showing initiative TO LEAD people in a certain direction. It sounds like she just wants to be in front of the pack, it doesn't matter what the pack thinks. The presidency should be inspirational, invigorating us to follow the leadership provided. Not eager to climb down to the lowest common denominator. Human rights are not a popular (in the democratic and enthusiastic version of that word) viewpoint, that's why they need a determined protection... or 'leadership'. I hesitate to extrapolate this incident to the rest of Africa, and some other parts of the world... but it is tempting.

Abortion and Christianity

A Christian speaks of liberties and Christian Reconstructionism preventing Christians from implementing a theocracy that enforces justice (for fetuses) not freedom. fetsiboomsticks: Occam asks how come you guys don't consider that it may not be about civil liberties and whatever other big words have been bandied about. It could be as simple as not wanting your child to be subjected to foster homes and the abuse of the fostering and adoption system. Why don't you abandon all notions of having your own children? Adopt ferociously and take up great tracts of land into Christian kibbutzim, where women who are considering abortion would prefer to deposit their children than face the indignities and guilt of adoption... and abortion.

TED: Atul Gawande: How do we heal medicine?

Systems have certain skills mechanisms to find problems mechanisms to solve problems checklists, with pause points, reminder of the key things that get forgotten the ability to implement - the part where you get people to adopt the method, difficult because it forces a confrontation with our issues we must accept that we are all part of pit-crews

Vagina Monologues

I told Eve Ensler my famous Vagina Monologues anecdote, and she asked me to post it to One Billion Rising  and Gillian Schutte asked me to repost it to V-Day . My Vagina Monologue anecdote I have ordered many things from Amazon, and always got everything I ordered... except one thing, Eve Ensler's "Vagina Monologues". I guess they are stealing it at the post office thinking it's porn. There's something delicious about the idea of someone sitting down for a lascivious session exploiting women and getting a big fat dose of feminism. I keep ordering it, over and over, and am still waiting to actually get it. Delicious.

TED: Lessons from Death Row inmates (David R. Dow)

David R. Dow says that violence at home breeds violence on the streets. My comment: This is a tough one. With the pace of change, parents who aren't keeping up feel that they have become useless and burdens to their kids. Parents feel that they have to pander to their children's desires in order to maintain the relationship. Parents have lost their confidence among the criticisms of how they bring up their kids and the minutiae of 'correct' breast-feeding. Their self-deprecation leads to self-loathing and violence. The globalization of knowledge has brought with it judgementalism, people looking over their neighbour's walls figuratively through the TV and other media. When accused, people act aggressively. And women... Women are so much more likely to not passively accept their husband's violence. Violence breeds more violence. The whole structure of the family needs to change to accommodate. And that's scary. I believe Dan has the answer.
