TED: Rachel Botsman: The currency of the new economy is trust Reputation is the measurement of how much a network trusts you. As the reputation goes up the more tasks you get and the more you can charge. As we move digitally we leave a reputation trail. Let's make our reputation travel with us from site to site. But one score is not nuanced enough to really reflect us. Influence is not the same as reputation - that people like us does not reflect on whether or not we can do tasks. So how do we collect reputation data. Realtime stream of who has trusted me or responded to a task I have done. My reputation capital dashboard will be checked by others, like Linkedin. South African Referendum 1992

If You've Ever Heard Someone Unjustly Talk About Reverse Racism You Have To See This South African's Response http://atlantablackstar.com/2014/05/30/youve-ever-heard-someone-unjustly-talk-reverse-racism-see-south-africans-response/ This white woman is an idiot. But I do think this is a very ungenerous representation of what happened in the referendum. Politics is a process, history is a process. I don't think 'whites ended apartheid'. That would gloss over the many lives of many black activists changed, ruined and taken, not to mention the lives of the few white anti-apartheid activists here, and the many many many activists of all colors everywhere around the world that acted against apartheid. Thank you. You made it happen. ONE of the things that happened was the referendum. The referendum asked "Do you want to end apartheid?". 76% of white people (those who had the political power TO END APARTHEID) in South Africa said that they didn't want it. ...

Robert changed my voice

Tanya: #NSFTS ~ Not Safe For The Sensitive. #Feminism ~ #WhitePrivilege is like #MalePrivilege. Men don't condemn machismo in all its forms because there are so many benefits for them. A shaven pussy, a shaven leg, a domestic servant, a trophy for hunting. They make no effort to hear #WhenWomenSpeak. They make no effort to entertain the voice of feminism. Instead they watch their pals rape, abuse and call women whores. White Privilege is the same, they don't take the time to hear, to listen, to envelope what they hear and try to change themselves to set a standard for their ivory towers. ... Robert: There are better ways of saying this: There are men who don't condemn machismo in all its forms because there are so many benefits for them. TED Let's treat violence like a contagious disease - Gary Slutkin

• violence interruptors - workers from same group, trained, cool them down, talk reason, buying time • outreach workers - keep people in the program, on therapy for 6-24 months focusing on behaviour change • changing norms - community activities • Chicago project dropped violence 67%, this has worked 20 times between 30% and 70% drop in violence. • criticism

Homophobists - How they hate

I agree with the part that suggests, but doesn't state clearly, that it's the 'receiving' male homosexual that is reviled - because he 'becomes the woman'. Homophobists are not-coincidentally also sexists, and I would venture, racists. These kinds of ignorances clump together, have an affinity for one another. To disguise their disgust at the head of the food chain 'acting like a woman' (their most reviled caste member being 'a woman') they expand and justify their bigotry to the 'delivering' man and the women that reflect that pair, the lesbians. And then, to justify their bigotry further... let me go no further, I have been riled up recently by someone demonstrating this point I am making, and I may be ready to blow a fuse. On another note, homophobists use their hatred of gays to establish their 'not-belonging' to the gay group. They parade their heterosexuality so that no one can mistakenly place them in that group. They build...

When people defend posting pics of hurt-by-human animals

And you need to tell us HOW to stop this. The sites that have the actions have the pictures so we will never know what to DO. So - It's more effective to give us a task. Don't post a picture of an animal hurt by firecrackers, report the person, open a dog shelter for the evening if you have a suitable yard, donate to a NAMED anti-firecracker organization, provide a complete list of Ward Representatives email addresses we can write to, organise a rally/lobby/toyitoyi/picket we can attend, tell us where we can volunteer the day after, tell us what calming things to do, organise a posse for the next day with a suitable car to find wandering animals, organise a posse with no animals to trawl for monsters and report them to the police, take pictures of the perpetrators cars and give them to the police, stage a sitin at the police station to demand that all cars on site are used to find perpetrators, take the police doughnuts for a year to extort a promise of help, tell us how to tra...

Separatism

Derailment can happen on all the 'sides' of a discussion, the hard part is facilitating forward motion and 'keeping it clean', i.e. keeping the derailers voiced, fair and not vitriolic. Now we need to turn derailers into some form of ally because derailers become the 'face' of the group. On another comment stream: http://www.blackgirldangerous.org/2013/09/no-more-allies/ #Race ~ #Feminism. #Separatism. #Apartheid. Mary Daly got fired for teaching derailers in separate spaces, sadly, but I always understood why she did it, empathized. I'm in the camp of "white people should shut the fuck up" as a general rule (á la Samantha Vice and Gillian Schutte), except when we are talking to our fellow white people. I don't get it right all the time, but I want to.  On another comment stream: Perhaps by claiming a white space they are acknowledging that white women think feminism is 'good for' black women... #TED: Michael Sandel: Why we shouldn't trust markets with our civic life?

Having a small gap between rich and poor puts our lives into the same spaces, makes us rub up against each other. We work and shop in the same places, our children go to the same schools. Democracy requires that we share in a common life, that we encounter one another. This teaches us to abide our differences and care for the common good. There's a moral and civic good that the market cannot honor. http://www.ted.com/talks/michael_sandel_why_we_shouldn_t_trust_markets_with_our_civic_life.html

#TED: Dambisa Moyo: Is China the new idol for emerging economies?

#TED: Dambisa Moyo: Is China the new idol for emerging economies? Raising economic rights over political rights, over freedom. More state involvement, more protectionism, declining individual rights. West can compete or co-operate. Instead of haranguing China for the way it's doing things, show them if (not THAT) it can be done better.

GCS Feminism

From Evernote: GCS Feminism Relegating racism to 'past' is a failure. Unified condemnation of women, exclusion of women, white women say this and then become part of the patriarchy. Feminism collides with racism. White women charter what racism is. White women position themselves as equal to men. Humanism, women is staged as a universal term, excluding race. Savagery articulated as cultural difference. Human rights, women latched to men by similarity. Difference is a racial Other. Liberalism is coupled with culture, problem. Proscription of actions ignores racial Other. Shapes what practices become Tradition. How can you separate west from anywhere else, how pure is anyone's philosophy. "John Stuart Mill?" Functioning human life "what would make us define something as not human?" Human = masculine = civilization. Reason, logic, conscience, conscious, women try to be reasonable, to be human. = America = universalism. Cho...

Help required ~ Pretoria Art Museum

Help required ~ Pretoria Art Museum has no guards who can exclusively look after the parking lot - so car stealers just wait patiently until the guard goes off to patrol other areas. They have no on-site person who answers the two telephone lines they have. The area around it is a mess with papers and rotting food. Their website...(s!) are all neglected. I have sent through a note and got a shrug back. I have suggested: "Have two-day exhibitions over one weekend a month. Take the money you would do the whole month's worth of guards and employ two on overtime for that weekend. Get an extra person to man the phones on those two days. That way we can come to the exhibitions, feel safe, get the full service treatment guaranteed. I for one would rather have one good weekend to go to Pretoria Art Museum than none at all." Anyone like to support me and send a note through to Mmutle Kgokong (MmutleKg@tshwane.gov.za) who is at least prepared to forward emails to the shrugger? ...

Hating Facebook's Edgerank

Why Facebook is becoming pasty (aside from the interruptive ad placements). When I post something controversial and you ignore it, it ranks low on Edgerank, Facebook's algorithm for what to post to the Feed. If you only Like sugar, or only engage with sugar, you only get sugar. Pretty dumb of Facebook.

Barry Schwartz: Using our practical wisdom

The first thing I want to do is say thank you to all of you. The second thing I want to do is introduce my co-author and dear friend and co-teacher. Ken and I have been working together for almost 40 years. That's Ken Sharpe over there. (Applause) So there is among many people -- certainly me and most of the people I talk to -- a kind of collective dissatisfaction with the way things are working, with the way our institutions run. Our kids' teachers seem to be failing them. Our doctors don't know who the hell we are, and they don't have enough time for us. We certainly can't trust the bankers, and we certainly can't trust the brokers. They almost brought the entire financial system down. And even as we do our own work, all too often, we find ourselves having to choose between doing what we think is the right thing and doing the expected thing, or the required thing, or the profitable thing. So everywhere we look, pretty much across the board, we worry that t...

Queer

#Queer ~ People hate this term. I don't. I hear that it is self-derisive and used as hate speech and can't be reclaimed and is self-poison, but I don't agree. To me the 'LGBTI' is so structured, it negates the fluidity of sexuality. For one,  it excludes non-heteronormative hets. I use queer, and I want all people who don't fit into 'normal' to be 'queer' by choice. I invite them to be, I want everyone to see that 'queer' is the new 'normal'.  # Queer  ~ 'Queer' recognizes fluidity in sexuality. LGBTI is confining, exclusionary. Non-heteronormative hets could choose to be 'queer'.

Malawian leadership

Malawi President Joyce Banda says, "I as a leader have no right to influence how people feel." (http://bit.ly/SsWXgz) COMMENT: It may be that Banda needs to understand that she is applying the word 'leadership' incorrectly - or perhaps somebody rounded a vernacular word up to leadership and it's not the word she said... because leadership means showing initiative TO LEAD people in a certain direction. It sounds like she just wants to be in front of the pack, it doesn't matter what the pack thinks. The presidency should be inspirational, invigorating us to follow the leadership provided. Not eager to climb down to the lowest common denominator. Human rights are not a popular (in the democratic and enthusiastic version of that word) viewpoint, that's why they need a determined protection... or 'leadership'. I hesitate to extrapolate this incident to the rest of Africa, and some other parts of the world... but it is tempting.
